About the Exhibition

Discover the world of Croatian painter Joso Bužan (1873–1936) at a special exhibition bringing together works from the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art and the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb.

Bužan was a distinctive chronicler of everyday Croatian life at the turn of the 20th century. His paintings explore rural life, peaceful countryside scenes and portraits of prominent members of society, offering a fascinating glimpse into the people, landscapes and customs of his time.

His favourite subjects included everyday life in continental Croatia, particularly the Zagreb surroundings of Šestine and Turopolje, the Posavina region, and scenes depicting Roma communities. Using a light colour palette and a distinctive plein-air-inspired approach, Bužan combined academic realism with humour, storytelling and vivid observations of ordinary life.

Beyond their cheerful atmosphere and idyllic rural settings, his works also reveal more subtle expressionist and symbolist undertones. The exhibition highlights both his depictions of village life and his accomplished portraits of notable public figures of the era.

The exhibition was developed by Dr Zvjezdana Antoš of the Ethnographic Museum and Dr Ivana Rončević Elezović of the National Museum of Modern Art.

Exhibition dates: 4 September – 18 October 2026.

A worthwhile cultural stop for visitors interested in Croatian art, history and everyday life in Zagreb at the turn of the 20th century.
