How to Divorce During the War – Film Screening in Zagreb

A personal relationship crisis meets a global catastrophe in this award-winning Lithuanian comedy.

About the Film

Vilnius, 2022. Marija has finally decided to have an honest conversation with her husband, Vytas, and tell him that she wants a divorce. The following day, Russia launches its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

As panic spreads across Lithuania and a refugee crisis unfolds, Marija and Vytas find themselves trying to navigate their separation under extraordinary and rapidly changing circumstances.

How to Divorce During the War is an award-winning comedy by Lithuanian director Andrius Blaževičius. Bringing together the intimate struggles of a failing marriage and the far-reaching consequences of war, the film offers a sharp yet empathetic examination of human behaviour, social attitudes and opportunism. Even when the characters believe they are doing the right thing, their choices reveal the contradictions and absurdities of everyday life in a time of crisis.

The film premiered internationally at the Sundance Film Festival, where Blaževičius received the award for directing.

Why See It?

By placing an intensely personal story against the backdrop of a major geopolitical crisis, the film explores how extraordinary events can transform ordinary decisions. With a blend of comedy, social observation and human insight, it offers a distinctive perspective on relationships, uncertainty and the ways people respond when their lives are suddenly turned upside down.

If you enjoy European cinema, thought-provoking stories and films that combine humour with contemporary social issues, this screening is worth considering during your visit to Zagreb.
