JOURNAL

Zagreb is a city that rewards a slower pace.

The historic centre is compact, many of the main sights are within walking distance, and some of the best moments are simply sitting down for coffee, wandering through a market or finding a quiet street away from the main square.

So if you have three days in Zagreb, don't try to see everything.

Here is how we would spend them.

DAY 1
Discover the Heart of Zagreb

Start in Ban Jelačić Square, the natural centre of the city.

From here, walk towards the Upper Town and explore the historic streets around St. Mark's Square.

You will pass some of Zagreb's best-known landmarks along the way, including the Stone Gate, one of the oldest preserved parts of the city.

Take your time.

The Upper Town is not large, and it is much more enjoyable when you are not trying to tick sights off a list.

Take the funicular

Zagreb's famous funicular connects the Lower and Upper Town and is one of the shortest public-transport rides you are ever likely to take.

It is also part of the city's character.

Even if you walk up, consider taking it down later.

Stop for coffee

Coffee is a serious part of everyday life in Zagreb.

Don't feel that you have to rush to the next attraction.

Find a café, sit outside if the weather is good and watch the city for a while.

This is one of the easiest ways to experience Zagreb like a local.

Visit Dolac Market

After exploring the Upper Town, head back towards Dolac Market.

The market is one of the best places to get a feel for everyday Zagreb.

Look at the fresh produce, local products and the famous red umbrellas.

If you are hungry, this is also a good moment to start exploring Croatian food.

Finish the day around Tkalčićeva Street

Tkalčićeva is one of the liveliest streets in central Zagreb.

It is full of cafés, restaurants and bars, making it an easy place to finish your first day.

Don't over-plan the evening.

Pick a place that looks inviting, order something Croatian and enjoy Zagreb after the sightseeing crowds have started to disappear.

DAY 2
Museums, Parks & Zagreb's Everyday Life

Your second day is a good time to explore some of the things that make Zagreb different from other European capitals.

Start with a relaxed breakfast and then choose one or two museums.

Choose your museum

Zagreb has an unusually strong museum scene.

You could visit the Museum of Broken Relationships, one of the city's most unusual and internationally known museums.

Or choose something completely different.

The Zagreb City Museum is a good option if you want to understand the city's history.

The important thing is not to turn your museum day into a race.

One or two good museums are better than six rushed visits.

Walk through the Green Horseshoe

After your museum visit, head into the Lower Town.

Zagreb's famous Green Horseshoe is a series of parks and green spaces that form a U-shaped area through the city centre.

It is perfect for a slower walk.

You will pass elegant buildings, squares, gardens and some of Zagreb's most pleasant public spaces.

Take a break in Zrinjevac

Zrinjevac Park is one of the nicest places in central Zagreb to stop for a while.

Grab a coffee or something small to eat and simply enjoy the surroundings.

This is also a good area for photography.

Evening: explore Zagreb on foot

By your second evening, you should already have a feel for the centre.

This is the perfect time to simply walk.

You don't necessarily need another attraction.

Walk through the streets around the main square, Upper Town and Tkalčićeva.

You may discover that your favourite part of Zagreb is the part you didn't plan.

Prefer to explore with someone who knows the city?

DAY 3 — Choose Your Zagreb

For your final day, don't automatically add another list of sights.

Choose the experience that suits you.

OPTION A

Stay in Zagreb

If you want a relaxed final day, explore parts of the city you have not seen yet.

Visit a local market.

Have a long lunch.

Find a café.

Walk through Maksimir Park.

Or simply return to somewhere you enjoyed during your first two days.

There is no rule saying that you cannot visit the same place twice.

OPTION B

Take a Day Trip

If you want to see more of Croatia, your third day can be a good opportunity for a day trip from Zagreb.

One of the most popular choices is Plitvice Lakes National Park, famous for its lakes, waterfalls and wooden walking paths.

It is a completely different experience from Zagreb and makes a memorable contrast to the city.

Other destinations can also work depending on the season and how much time you have.

What We Would Actually Do

If we had only three days in Zagreb, we wouldn't try to do everything.

We would keep it simple:

Day 1

Ban Jelačić Square → Upper Town → Stone Gate → St. Mark's Square → Dolac Market → Tkalčićeva

Day 2

Museum → Lower Town → Green Horseshoe → Zrinjevac → relaxed evening walk

Day 3

Either a slower Zagreb day or a day trip outside the city

And somewhere in between:

Coffee. Croatian food. A little wandering.

Those things are just as much a part of Zagreb as the famous sights.

A Few Things to Know Before You Go

Zagreb is walkable

The central areas are compact, and walking is often the easiest way to move between sights.

Comfortable shoes will make your visit much better.

Don't fill every hour

Zagreb is not a city you need to conquer.

Leave some empty space in your itinerary.

Eat something local

Try at least one traditional Croatian dish rather than spending every meal on food you could find anywhere.

If you haven't read it yet, our guide to Croatian food we'd actually recommend is a good place to start.

Coffee is not just coffee

If someone invites you for coffee, don't assume it means a five-minute takeaway.

In Zagreb, coffee is often about sitting, talking and taking your time.

Zagreb changes with the seasons

Summer, winter, spring and autumn can give you very different versions of the city.

Don't judge Zagreb only by one season.

The Locallo Way to See Zagreb

You don't need a perfect itinerary.

You need a good starting point.

See the important places.

Eat something local.

Walk without a plan for an hour.

Stop for coffee.

Then follow your curiosity.

That's how you stop simply visiting Zagreb and start experiencing it.
