JOURNAL

Zagreb is easy to explore, but knowing where to spend your time makes a difference. If you're visiting for the first time, you don't need to see everything. Here are the places, experiences and little stops we'd actually recommend.

01

Start in the Upper Town

Zagreb's Upper Town is where we'd start. The streets are quiet in the morning, the architecture changes from one corner to the next, and you can get a feel for the city without rushing from one attraction to another.

Zagreb funicular

Start around St. Mark's Square, wander through the small streets toward Lotrščak Tower, then make your way down toward the city centre.
Locallo tip: Go early if you can. The Upper Town feels completely different before the streets become busy.

02
Walk Down to the City Centre

From the Upper Town, head downhill toward Zagreb's main square, Ban Jelačić Square. The route is short, but don't rush it. This is where Zagreb changes from quiet historic streets into the busy rhythm of the city centre.

Take a look around the square, then continue toward Tkalčićeva Street. This is one of the easiest parts of Zagreb to explore on foot, and a good place to stop for a coffee, a drink or simply some people-watching.

Locallo tip: Zagreb is compact. Once you're in the historic centre, most of the places worth seeing are within an easy walk.

03

Take a Coffee Break

Coffee is part of everyday life in Zagreb. Don't treat it as just a quick stop between sights. Find a table, sit down and watch the city go by.

Around the centre you'll find plenty of cafés, from traditional places to newer specialty coffee spots. There is no need to chase a famous name — sometimes the best choice is simply the café that looks inviting when you walk past.

Locallo tip: Give yourself at least 30 minutes for coffee. In Zagreb, sitting down is part of the experience.

04
Taste Zagreb

TRY SOMETHING TRADITIONAL

If you want to understand Zagreb a little better, try some traditional Croatian food. Look for dishes such as štrukli, purica s mlincima or a good local pastry, rather than sticking only to familiar international options.

If you prefer to discover the food with someone who knows the city, a guided food experience can be a good way to taste several local
 specialties in one afternoon.

05
See More Than the Main Sights

Zagreb rewards curiosity. Once you've seen the main square and Upper Town, look for the stories beneath the obvious sights — hidden courtyards, old passages, underground spaces and the details you might otherwise walk straight past.

A walking tour can be a good choice if you want to understand the history behind the places you're seeing rather than simply ticking them off a list.

Have an Extra Day?

If you're staying in Zagreb for more than two or three days, consider leaving the city for a day. Castles, countryside and smaller historic towns are all within reach, and a day trip can give you a completely different view of northern Croatia.
