Zagreb is one of those cities that is easy to explore once you understand a few basics. The historic centre is compact, trams connect the wider city, and many of the places visitors want to see are within walking distance.
Here is our simple local guide to the things worth knowing before you arrive.
1. Zagreb is a city you can explore on foot
For a first visit, walking is often the best way to experience Zagreb.
Start around Ban Jelačić Square and make your way towards the Upper Town. Along the way, you'll find the Dolac Market, Tkalčićeva Street, the Cathedral, Stone Gate, St. Mark's Square and many smaller streets and courtyards.
Don't rush.
Some of Zagreb's charm is in the spaces between the main sights — a coffee on a terrace, a quiet street, a market stall or a view over the rooftops.
2. The city centre is compact
You don't need to spend your day jumping from one attraction to another.
Most of the classic sights in the historic centre are relatively close together, which makes Zagreb easy to explore at a relaxed pace.

3. Zagreb has an excellent tram network
When you want to go beyond the centre, trams are one of the easiest ways to get around.
They connect the central areas with many neighbourhoods and important parts of the city. Buses complement the tram network where trams don't go.
For visitors, public transport can be much more useful than taking a taxi every time you need to move around.
4. Coffee is part of the Zagreb experience
Don't expect Zagreb to be a city where everyone grabs a coffee and leaves five minutes later.
Coffee is social here.
Sitting outside, meeting friends and simply watching the city go by is part of everyday Zagreb life.
So leave some space in your itinerary for it.

5. The Dolac Market is worth seeing
If you want to see a more everyday side of Zagreb, visit Dolac Market.
It sits just above the main square and has been one of the city's central markets for generations.
Go in the morning when the market is most lively. You'll see local produce, traditional products and vendors going about their daily business.
It is also a great starting point for exploring the surrounding streets.
6. Zagreb has two very different seasons
Zagreb changes considerably throughout the year.
Summer brings long days, outdoor terraces and a lively city centre.
Winter has a completely different atmosphere, with colder days, cafés, museums and seasonal events.
And then there are the shoulder seasons — spring and autumn — when the city can be especially pleasant for walking.
There isn't really one “best” time to visit. It depends on what kind of Zagreb you want to experience.
7. You don't have to see everything
This may be the most important tip.That's often when Zagreb starts to feel less like a destination and more like a city.
Zagreb is not a city that rewards rushing from one attraction to the next just to tick boxes.
Choose a few things you really want to see, then leave room for the unexpected.
Walk a little further. Take a different street. Stop for coffee. Visit a market. Sit in a square.
8. How many days do you need?
For a first visit, two to three days is a good starting point.
Two days gives you enough time to see the historic centre and experience some of Zagreb's food, cafés, museums and local atmosphere.
With three days, you can slow down and explore beyond the obvious sights — or take a day trip outside the city.
If you have more time, even better.
9. What should you book in advance?
Not everything needs to be planned ahead.
For popular walking tours, day trips and some special experiences, booking in advance can be a good idea, especially during busy periods.
For the rest, keep some flexibility.
One of the advantages of Zagreb is that you can combine a little planning with plenty of spontaneous exploring.
