FLEX – A Satirical Theatre Performance About the Absurdities of Modern Work

What does work mean in a world where productivity, identity and purpose can become absurd concepts? Find out at Flex, a contemporary Croatian theatre performance coming to Zagreb on 12 October 2026.

About the Performance

Flex is an original theatre project developed through collective improvisation by a group of actors and dramaturge Ivan Penović, the creative team behind the performance Katalonac.

The story unfolds inside a private company and explores the everyday lives of its employees. Through satire and absurd situations, the play examines modern working culture, motivation and the methods of production that increasingly seem to have lost touch with their original purpose.

Flex is portrayed as a private data-protection agency that occasionally deals in real estate. It is neither a market leader nor a company pushing boundaries or championing workers' rights. It is simply a business — a place where people work to support themselves and those around them.

The play's central idea is captured in its ironic description of work as “Rezignirajuća agencijska dinamika” — a resigned, bureaucratic agency dynamic. The result is a sharp and unconventional look at the routines, contradictions and absurdities of corporate life.

Identity in the Digital Age

Beyond the office environment, Flex also questions how we define identity in an increasingly digital world.

The performance plays with the idea that identity can be reduced to something as superficial as the colour theme on a mobile phone screen. In a world where our lives are increasingly mediated by technology, identity begins to resemble a virtual currency: perhaps we possess it without realising it, or perhaps we know we have it but are unsure what it is actually worth.

Combining workplace satire with reflections on digital identity, the production invites audiences to question the systems and habits that shape modern life.

Cast and Creative Team

The performance is directed by Ivan Penović and features Domagoj Janković, Karlo Mrkša, Bernard Tomić and Pavle Vrkljan, with Matija Čigir contributing offstage.

The production is a collaboration between the artistic organisation Punctum and KunstTeatar, supported by Croatia's Ministry of Culture and Media and the City of Zagreb's cultural administration.

The creative team has also received recognition for its theatrical work. Flex was awarded the Croatian Theatre Award for Outstanding Contribution, while Bernard Tomić received the Ivo Fici Award at the Actors' Festival for his performance in the production.
