Looking for a cultural experience in Zagreb tonight? Discover two landmark works of Croatian cinema at the Cultural and Information Centre (KIC), as part of its Film Curriculum programme.

The evening presents two very different perspectives on traditional rural life in Croatia, combining a poetic documentary with a celebrated feature film.

Black Waters (Crne vode, 1956)

Director: Rudolf Sremec

Genre: Short documentary

Duration: 13 minutes

Set in Kopački Rit, one of Croatia's most remarkable natural wetlands, this poetic documentary explores the beauty of the landscape, its dramatic contrasts and the relationship between people and nature.

The film is also notable for the internationally recognised cinematography of Frano Vodopivec, awarded at the Cannes Film Festival.

Master of His Own Body (Svoga tela gospodar, 1957)

Director: Fedor Hanžeković

Screenplay: Slavko Kolar

Genre: Feature film — drama and comedy

Duration: 100 minutes

This celebrated Croatian film examines the social conventions and moral constraints of rural life in the past.

The story follows Iva, a poor man forced by his father into marriage with Roža, a wealthy but physically disabled woman. The arrangement includes a dowry and a cow, but Iva's refusal to accept the marriage creates a painful and complex conflict.

Written by Slavko Kolar, a writer deeply familiar with Kajkavian village life, the film offers a compelling portrait of traditional rural society.
